It's hard to credit that such a chubby little youngster could metamorphose into an author of such natural dignity. The blue cardigan pictured here was Jackson's favourite. He was so attached to it that when it needed washing it had to be surgically removed.

The tyres on the bicycle to the left were so fat that the young author found it impossible to actually move, having to satisfy himself instead by posing on it for photographs in a variety of polo-neck sweaters.
